Turning a product into a tool for democracy

A unique twist on an iconic accessory.

Challenge

Texas Observer tasked us to help them make merchandise that was more than their logo plastered on the side of a mug or tote bag. We took inspiration from a sentence in their mission statement , “We will serve no group or party but will hew hard to the truth as we find it and the right as we see it.” We resonated with that sentiment and reflected it through the product.

Outcome

After a brainstorming and strategy session, we settled on using the humble bandana as a platform to encourage civic engagement. We liked that the bandana is found in both American western culture and how it has been used among political movements. To this end, we printed the names, political parties, and phone numbers of Texas’ elected officials on them. The Political Reference Bandanas were designed to have an elegantly municipal feel. The patterns, which were pulled from old pay phones are rendered to reference paisley bandana patterns of the old west.

See the bandanas at The Texas Observer Store.
