Outcome:
Arts organizations based in Dallas, Kansas City, Oklahoma City, and Bentonville, Arkansas, came together to discuss the initiatives currently underway in each region and ideate how we may learn from one another to build a stronger fine arts community in the middle of the country. Through continued dialogue, artist exchanges, and compelling programming, Plains Exchange is set to become a vital resource within the region and a model to the wider fine arts community across the country.
Challenge:
Shane Darwent is a Tulsa-based sculptor and fellow of the Tulsa Artist Fellowship program. Shane aimed to collapse boundaries and foster relationships to build a thriving fine arts community in the middle of the country. Plains Exchange was the result of Shane's 2023 public project for the Fellowship Plains Exchanges facilitates creativity, collaboration, and audience sharing between artists working in the Southern Plains and Western Ozark regions. New relationships are fostered by hosting one-on-one conversations, group dialogues, and collaborative projects between artists working in similar yet largely disconnected regional arts hubs.
